Makunouchi Ippo is the main character in the series. A shy, timid, young man who avoids fights at all costs. While in school Ippo was often bullied and beat up by a band of thugs. Not one to look for problems Ippo never retaliated and was a punching bag for them. One day while Takamura Mamoru was doing his roadwork he noticed Ippo getting his usual after school beating and stepped in to save him. Not having known that Takamura was a fighter Ippo was amazed at his natural skill and eventually passed out from the beating. Awaking in Kamogawa Boxing Gym, Ippo who had never stepped foot inside the gym marveled at all boxers and equipment. Takamura being the kind soul that he is tells Ippo that he thinks hes the worst kind of person, a person whom doesnt defend himself. As Ippo starts to walk away from all the shame Takamura steps in and tries to make Ippo Feel Better. After some tips by Takamura, Ippo is instructed to take a swing at the sand bag. The rest is just history.

As a fighter Ippo has the stamina of an Ox and the strength of a bull. His strict training from Kamogawa Genji helps him go from a young boy into a destructive man with power. Ippo unfortunately has no ring presence. Often the one intimidated by his opponents he usually goes into fights doubting his own innate skill. Ippo’s finishing moves include The Liver Blow, Dempsey Roll, and the Gazel Punch.
